Thinking about a sliding barn door but not sure it’s the right choice over a normal hinged door? Both have their place. Here’s an honest comparison to help you decide — including the question everyone asks about privacy.
The quick answer
Choose a sliding barn door when you want to save floor space, make a design statement, or fit a door where a swinging door won’t fit. Choose a hinged door when you need maximum privacy and sound-blocking, like a main bathroom or bedroom in a shared home.
Space
This is the barn door’s biggest win. A hinged door needs a clear arc of floor to swing into — often close to a square metre. A barn door slides flat along the wall, so it frees up that space entirely. That makes barn doors brilliant for small rooms, tight passages, en-suites, pantries and any spot where a swinging door would bump into furniture.
Looks
A barn door is a feature. It adds warmth, texture and a focal point that a plain hinged door simply doesn’t. If you want your door to add to the room rather than disappear into it, the barn door wins.
Privacy and sound
Here’s the honest part. Because a barn door hangs over the opening rather than sealing into a frame, there’s a small gap around the edges, so it doesn’t block sound or light as completely as a hinged door. For most spaces — bedrooms, offices, pantries, dressing rooms, lounges — that’s absolutely fine. For a main bathroom or a room where you want full sound isolation, a hinged door (or a barn door sized with generous overlap and a floor guide) is the better call. You can improve a barn door’s privacy by making it overlap the opening by 50–75mm on each side.
Cost
The two are broadly comparable for a quality door. A made-to-order barn door with its track starts at around R2,440, and you avoid the cost of a frame and hanging labour since barn doors are quick to fit. See our barn door cost guide for a full breakdown.
Ease of fitting
Barn doors are usually easier and faster to install — there’s no frame to build or hinges to align, just a track mounted above the opening. See our installation guide.
So, which should you choose?
| If you want… | Best choice |
|---|---|
| To save floor space | Barn door |
| A design feature | Barn door |
| Maximum privacy & sound-blocking (main bathroom) | Hinged door |
| A room divider for a large opening | Double barn doors |
| Bedrooms, offices, pantries, dressing rooms | Barn door |
